Maroto Valer wins the first prize awarded by Spanish scientists in Sweden
Copenhagen, September 27 (EFE). Today, Professor Mercedes Maruto Valer, expert in energy systems and decarbonization, was honored with the first edition of the ACES-Margarita Salas Awards, awarded by the Spanish scientific community in Sweden.
Maroto Valer (Vitoria, 1971), Attaché at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh (UK), is a global expert on sustainable energy systems with “leading” scientific contributions in the areas of carbon capture, use and storage technologies and solar fuels, highlights to the jury.
“The impact of his research, which proposes technical solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, is fundamental in the current context of climate change,” reads the ruling, which highlights her multidisciplinary approach.
Maroto Valer studied chemical engineering at the University of the Basque Country and then moved to Scotland to obtain his Ph.D. at the University of Strathclyde.
After seven years working in the United States, she returned to Europe to continue her research and teaching work at the University of Nottingham, where she was awarded a full professorship. Since 2012, he has advanced his career at Heriot-Watt University.
The ACES-Margarita Salas Awards, established by the Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden, recognize the work of researchers of Spanish nationality with recognized international influence.
The awards, supported by AECID’s Department of Cultural and Scientific Relations and the Ramón Areces Foundation, will rotate annually between the categories of Physics, Mathematics and Engineering, awarded this year to Maroto-Valer, Biomedical, Chemical and Environmental Sciences.
Margarita Salas, a CSIC researcher at the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center (Madrid), is one of the most relevant Spanish scientists.
The prize is worth 3000 euros and will be presented at the end of November in Stockholm, a week before the Swedish capital hosts the Nobel Prize ceremony. EFE
