ON SUNDAY, the social media was abuzz with reports that a university in Iloilo City turned down on the 11th hour an earlier reservation for its conference hall to be used as a venue of an activity for Ilocos Norte Governor Maria Imelda Josefa “Imee” Marcos, daughter of the late dictator Ferdinand Marco Sr.
Facebook user Aurelio Servando posted on his account late Saturday evening that Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U) scrapped the reservation for Marcos.
The post reads, “Today, Iloilo Science and Technology University took a principled stand other schools should follow. Somebody reserved a conference hall without identifying what is it for and who will be the guest. On the day of the affair, school officials and students were surprised to find a streamer on its’ main gate welcoming Gov. Imee Marcos.”
“Even with a police advance party present already, ISAT U people quickly took down the streamer and picketed, forcing Marcos to abort the affair. This is one place of learning that won’t take historical revisionism. Never again to a Marcos.”
But Heinz Gumaquil, ISAT-U information officer, said he was at the university yesterday and did not see any protest action.
“As far as I know, there was a reservation made although we did not know that if it was for Governor Marcos,” Gumaquil said.
He only learned about the event Saturday morning when he arrived at the campus as the university was celebrating its Alumni Day.
The supposed activity was to take place at the AVR hall of N Building.
“I’m not privy to the reason why it was cancelled. But as far as I know, there was no picket that happened,” he added.
Gumaquil said it was a legitimate reservation.
He added that they would investigate why such report surfaced and they will issue an official statement today, Sept 10, 2018.
