THE body of a 46-year-old tanod or village watchman was found dead in an irrigation canal at Barangay San Miguel in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, morning of Sept 9, 2018.

Mary Jane Fajura was harvesting vegetables near an irrigation canal at around 6 a.m. when she saw Romirico Baron’s body floating on the water.

Baron was last seen alive at a birthday party around 9:00 pm of Sept 8, said Senior Insp. Joeven Arevalo, Barotac Viejo police commander.

Witnesses claimed they heard Baron talking to someone via his phone while he was walking home.

Baron allegedly slipped off the pathway and fell into the irrigation canal, Arevalo said, adding that the strong current due to heavy rains may have swept the victim away.
