Village dad accused of shooting laborer

ROXAS City, Capiz – A village treasurer is accused of shooting to death a laborer evening of June 8, 2017 at Brgy. Cagay here.

Supt. Luther Lugo III, Roxas City police chief, said a witness pointed to barangay treasurer Fredimar Javellana as the alleged assailant of Michael Beliber, 31, also of Sitio Cablatan Brgy. Cagay here.

Lugo said the witness claimed that Javellana may have shot Beliber to save PO2 Rolyn Boy Fernandez.

Beliber was declared dead at Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital here.

Beliber and his father Manolito, 59, were drinking liquor at their house together with John Albata, 35, a maintenance worker of Metro Roxas Water District; and a certain Anthony Clarito and Reymund dela Cruz when a heated argument erupted between father and son.

The victim got irritated and attempted to hack his father and other drinking buddies. But Manolito and the three others ran for safety.

The victim then shouted at the top of his voice and proceeded to the nearby house of Albata.

As Albata attempted to pacify the victim, Manolito called for help from Cagay village chief Moreno Gonzaga.

Gonzaga along with several barangay councilors and members of the Barangay Peace Action Team (BPAT) called for backup from the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) team.

PO2 Fernandez, a police officer assigned at Roxas City police station, happened to be at Gonzaga’s house and went to the scene of the incident.

The elder Beliber requested Gonzaga to talk to the victim and convince him to surrender the bolo.

But the victim suddenly assaulted Fernandez when the latter introduced himself as a policeman.

The policeman blocked and pushed the hand of the victim but the handle of the bolo accidentally hit the former’s neck.

Afterward, two gunshots were heard and Beliber fell to the ground with blood oozing from his body.

The victim suffered gunshot wounds on the left armpit and left abdomen.

The police recovered from the crime scene a .45-caliber pistol with serial number 885835, two cartridges of the same caliber, and a 20-inch bolo.

Meanwhile, the police are expected to file appropriate charges against Javellana anytime this week.

“It could be homicide or murder case but depending on the investigation of the police,” Lugo added.
