Solo Parents’ Day pushed

CITY COUNCILOR Lyndon Acap proposed a resolution declaring every first Saturday of October as Solo Parents’ Day in Iloilo City.

Acap said his measure will complement Republic Act 8972 or the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act and will institutionalize the privileges of single parents.

“Once it is approved, we will be the sixth city in the country to pass such legislation,” he said.

The councilor said the resolution also aims to provide programs and activities to recognize the hardships of being both a father and a mother.

These include the conduct of children-parents activities, search for best solo parents, providing psychological assistance and counseling, among others.

“We will tap the help of a psychologist for some sharing of experience as well as inform them the benefits that they are entitled to,” he said.

Acap said he is also in talks with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for additional privileges for solo parents such as a special seat in public utility vehicles (PUVs), fare discount, and priority lane, among others.

Financial assistance is also being mulled, especially for the less fortunate single parents.

City Councilor R Leoni Gerochi said the ordinance aims to determine the benefits for solo parents provided by other government agencies and how the local government can help provide the benefits.

Acap said he requested the DSWD for the number of solo parents in the city.

The resolution is already on second reading l.
