SAPIAN, Capiz – More than 100 persons in 22 families are in a evacuation center here after rockslides forced them to leave their homes at Sitio Ilaya, Brgy. Poblacion.
According to the residents, they were shocked upon hearing the sound of rocks rolling from the hills towards their backyard and houses.
The residents asked for assistance from the municipal government of Sapian for fear that more rockslides will follow.
Mayor Arthur John Binas ordered the residents to vacate their homes to avoid casualties.
Some of the residents believe that continuous rains may have caused the soil to erode. They also believe that blasting activities in the barangay and the aftershocks brought by the recent earthquakes might be the cause of the slides.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Sapian and the Aksyon Tabang have inspected the area. Assessment is still ongoing to determine if when can the residents return.
