A SUSPECTED robber was killed in a shootout with police afternoon of Jan. 13, 2019 in Lambunao, Iloilo.
The suspect, Louie Vicente, allegedly traded shots with members of the Lambunao Police Station who were about to arrest him and two other suspects around 1:20 p.m. Sunday at Purok 5, Barangay Bagongbong.
Chief Inspector Rene Obregon, Lambunao police chief, said Vicente attempted to throw a grenade at police officers who were about to serve a warrant of arrest for robbery in Criminal Case No. 11-69933.
His arrest warrant was issued Dec. 28, 2015.
An encounter ensued which led to the suspect’s death.
Obregon said that the main targets of their operation were spouses Joan Lego and Myleen Lego, who have an arrest warrant for theft. Joan is Vicente’s cousin.
But the couple fled by scaling down a ravine.
The cousins forged an alliance in attacking their targets.
One of their modus operandi is for Myleen to apply as house help.
After two days, she would unceremoniously leave her employer. It appeared she gathered information about her employers before Lego and his cousins would stage the robbery.
Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, Iloilo police director, said Vicente was a suspect in the series of robbery cases in Cabatuan and Lambunao towns.
The most daring was the P500,000 robbery case in Cabatuan last year.
There have been attempts to arrest the suspects since last year.
“Pero may batingting (warning device) sila. They live in a hilly area. ‘Pag may ibang tao sa area, pinapatunog nila ang batingting to warm the suspects,” he added.
The suspected allegedly acted as local “Robin Hood” or thieves who share their loot with the poor.
At times, they also threatened neighbors who would go against them.
