A 34-YEAR-OLD man who was believed to suffer from nervous breakdown, went on robbery binge at Igbaras, Iloilo, evening of Sept 13, 2018.
Ricky Gevero of Barangay Kinagdan, Igbaras, was killed after allegedly putting up a fight with responding police officers.
Gevero, a vehicle mechanic, succumbed to a lone gunshot wound on his cheek.
Inspector Rogelio Tomagtang, Igbaras police chief, said the suspect was armed with a caliber .45 pistol when he waylaid Arly Bryan Duran, a motorcycle rider, around 7:30 p.m. at Kinagdan village.
He allegedly hopped on Duran’s motorcycle then pistol-whipped the victim’s head.
Duran found a way to escape, leaving his motorcycle behind. He asked for help from village officials who called for police assistance.
Minutes later, another motorist also complained of being waylaid by the same person.
Frank Denanis, driver of DRL Taxi, claimed the suspect flagged him down. When he opened the cab’s window, the suspect poked a gun at him and declared the hold-up.
The cabbie engaged the suspect in a short conversation until he saw an opportunity to speed away.
The third complainant was Floramae Calitabo, who claimed that the suspect also waylaid her and her brother while riding a motorcycle.
“When we arrived at the area, we tried to negotiate for him to surrender,” Tomagtang said.
Village officials also asked Gevero to lay down his arm.
Police later cornered the suspect behind the village chapel. Instead of surrendering to authorities, the suspect allegedly fired his gun.
“The area was an open field. Our policemen were just around 100 meters away from him. We had no choice but to retaliate,” Tomagtang said.
Gevero was brought to Rep. Pedro Trono Memorial District Hospital (RPTMDH) in Guimbal town where he declared dead on arrival.
Police probe indicated that the victim might have been mentally ill.
According to his wife, Gevero had problem sleeping and suffering from appetite loss the past three days.
Gevero, a father of three children, also underwent rehabilitation.
