THE Iloilo City Police Office will conduct a series of activities relative to the May 2019 midterm polls on Jan 13, which is also the start of the election period.
First is the Unity Walk starting 6:30 a.m. from the Iloilo Provincial Capitol grounds at Bonifacio Drive, City Proper district.
The walk will pass by the Rotonda in front of the old Provincial Capitol building before proceeding to Muelle Loney Street all the way to the newly-inaugurated Dinagyang Grandstand where a mass will be celebrated.
After the mass, political candidates will sign a peace covenant for promoting a peaceful, fair, and honest elections.
Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, ICPO spokesperson, said they expect political candidates from the province and city of Iloilo to attend the activity, as well as representatives from different agencies such as the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Justice, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), National Bureau of Investigation 6 (NBI-6), and Bureau of Fire Protection 6 (BFP-6).
Also expected to participate are members of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), members of the academic and force multipliers like Citizens Crime Watch, KIF-ACO, Bantay Bayan Foundation Inc., Guardians Brotherhood Inc. and BPATs Jaro.
“We want to publicly raise awareness that everybody could contribute in promoting a orderly, honest, peaceful and credible polls,” Sangrines said.
While some regard the peace covenant signing as a futile effort, Sangrines said they are banking on political candidates to stay true to their commitment.
