MAYOR Jose Espinosa III said that the city government is eyeing a 7,000-seater sports stadium in Iloilo City.

Espinosa made the announcement during the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) All-Star Game at the University of San Agustin covered gym on May 27, 2018.

The project aims to “bring in more big sporting events to the metropolis.”

According to Espinosa, the proposal is now being processed. “This is our commitment because sports development is one major aspect of our governance.”

“I already talked to our city engineer about this so that there will be more PBA (Philippine Basket Association) games and other events in the city,” he said.

Other than being a convention hub of the country, Espinosa believes that the rise of the stadium will help promote Iloilo City as a sports tourism destination.

Espinosa also said that sports would help make Iloilo City a “drug-free community.”

“If we can have sports program for our people, especially the young, this will complement our anti-drug campaign. Be in sports, not on drugs,” he added.
