THIRTY-ONE persons were arrested for joining an illegal cockfight in Antique province over the weekend.
Majority of them were arrested 9:30 a.m. of Jan. 12, 2019 at the boundary of Sitio So-ong and Sitio Lugutan in Barangay Igbonglo, San Jose town.
Police collared 29 persons, including six minors.
Recovered were various paraphernalia, P15,198 in bet money, two dead gamefowls with gaff, six live fighting cocks, and cages.
The following day, police arrested two elderly men for the same violation at Sitio Bacong, Barangay Camancijan, Culasi town.
The suspects were identified as Virgilio Ortega, 60, and Salvador Bacolod, 56.
They were yielded with cash do P2,240.
Also, two persons were arrested for illegal cockfighting at Sitio Diniwid, Barangay Balabag, Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan.
Suspects Arnel Arcibal and Roden Dominguez were collared 11:00 a.m. of Sunday.
Members of Malay Police Station caught them engaging in bulo-bulo with seven fighting cocks and P1,570 bet money.
In the Philippines, cockfighting, locally termed as sabong or bulang, is generally legal as long as there are held in authorized cockpits.
The illegal games called tupada or tigbakay are held in secluded or makeshift cockpits.
Illegal cockfighting is punishable under Presidential Decree 449 as amended by PD 1602.
