WE CAN never repay the sacrifices of those who offered their lives for us to have the freedom we are enjoying. But in remembering, we, at the least, honor them. On March 18, 2017, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr., Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and other Iloilo city and province officials with PVAO Administrator Ernesto Carolina and Major Gen. Jon Aying of the Philippine Army led the celebration of “Liberation of Panay, Guimaras and Romblon” at Balantang Memorial Cemetery National Shrine in Jaro, Iloilo City. Surviving World War II veterans were recognized, namely: Sgt. Eladio Macasar Penaranda, PFC Cornelio Lustre Areno, PFC Loreto Laru-an Lazo, Sgt. Ambrosio Alfeche Ambut, PFC Ramon Atintar Oro and PVT Fernando Alintitud Alecto. March 18, 1945 marks the day when Panay Guerrilla Forces, with help from the US, freed the islands of Panay, Guimaras and Romblon from the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army.
