JERWIN BAURE, 21, of Guimaras placed second in the October 2017 Fisheries Technologist Board Examination.
He is currently based in Quezon City, Metro Manila as a Research Assistant at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), the research arm of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
Baure took up Bachelor of Science in Fisheries at the University of the Philippines Visayas because he loves science, aside from reading, since his childhood.
He said Fisheries is an interdisciplinary course that includes capture fisheries, aquaculture, post-harvest technologies, fisheries policies, extension, business, and management.
With the goal to help uplift the fisheries profession and industry in the country, he is currently affiliated with AGHAM (Advocates of Science and Technology for the People); volunteers in one of the projects of the Center for Environmental Concerns (CEC) related to fisherfolks; and helps out Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya or National Alliance of Small Fisherfolk Organizations).
“I would like to advise parents that sometimes you just have to let your children fight their own battles. Let them explore their strengths and weaknesses, what they want to do in life. Let them learn from their mistakes, support and give them advice when they fall, and help them redeem themselves again. Don’t force them to do something they don’t really like because they would grow up hating it.”
