Solar-powered irrigation project a boon to Iloilo farmers

THIRTY bulb onion farmers are benefitting from the solar-powered irrigation projects recently installed in the municipality of Miagao here.

April Joy Depamaylo, the town’s bulb onion coordinator, said the solar-powered irrigation projects were installed in two sites in the municipality.

“One was installed in Barangay Cubay and the other one was in Barangay Guibongan, with 15 farmers benefitting from each site,” she said.

She added that the project was implemented by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) and facilitated by the DA High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) Regional Field Office-6.

“The project can provide lower cost of irrigation particularly for bulb onion farmers,” she said.

She said the municipality is considered as one of the largest producers of bulb onion in Western Visayas.

“Bulb onion is one major value crop which contributes to the income of most local farmers,” she added. (JBG/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
