ROXAS CITY, Capiz – The government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) gives a P2,400 pension to senior citizens under the Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT).

Aside from the quarterly pension, elders will receive the UCT aid, a one-time cash transfer program for the year. The program aims to mitigate the impact of the tax reform law on senior citizens.

DSWD Regional Office 6 data showed that 270,419 of the 355,908 social pensioners in Western Visayas will receive their pensions.

“So far, we have only received P649,500,600 budget allocation for the UCT in Western Visayas, the reason that we prioritized to give the aid to the senior citizens who are 64 years old and above,” said DSWD-6 Senior Citizen Focal Person Judith Barredo.

Violeta Mendoza, 76 of Malocloc Norte, Ivisan, Capiz said she is grateful for what she have received from the government.

Pasalamat gid ako nga may P1,500 ako nga ginabaton nga pension  kada tatlo ka bulan” (I am thankful that I am receiving P1,500 every three months as social pension),” she said during the distribution of social pension for the elderly, August 9.

While she waited for her name to be called during the distribution of social pension for the third quarter of this year, Mendoza said that she would buy rice using her pension.

Mendoza lost her husband in 2016 and her only grandchild is living with her. Hence, the UCT is a big help to their daily living.

When asked if she will demand from the government to increase the monthly pension, she replied, “kon dugangan gid man, maayo man basta ako nagapasalamat gid sa akon ginabaton subong” (If there will be additional aid, it will be good but for me I am thankful for what I am receiving today).

Lola Violeta is one of the 2,141 social pensioners in Ivisan town. (PIA-Capiz)
