“WHAT factors lead teenagers to commit suicide?” will be the topic of a Children’s Forum which will convene panelists from government agencies and Faith-Based Organization today, Dec 7, 2017, in Iloilo City.
Some 170 participants comprised of Supreme Student Government Officers from 14 public secondary schools in the city and invited children and youth from the Iloilo City Police Office-Women and Children Protection Desk (ICPO-WCPD) and other child advocacy groups are expected to attend the forum.
“We have invited representatives from Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Education and other experts to shed light on this emerging issue among teenagers and answer questions from the participants,” said Rosana Alfaras, executive director of the Iloilo Children Welfare Foundation, Inc. (ICWFI) which spearheaded the activity.
Together with their network partners, Alfaras said they chose the topic as they have noted cases of suicide involving children.
“What is the cause of suicide is even unknown to their parents,” said Alfaras.
In the afternoon, a Children’s Congress will also be held to gather issues and concerns of in-school children to be presented to local government officials for their response and commitment.
City Councilors Jay Trenas and Liezl Joy Zulueta-Salazar were also invited to the one-day event which is part of the ICWFI’s activities for the National Children’s Month celebration.
Alfaras said the forum is also part of their efforts to strengthen the participation of children in adherence to the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
ICWFI is a non-government organization whose operation is more focused on community-based program framework through “preventive approaches” in the community level for the children in conflict with the law, children at risk of offending and school-based children.
