SEVERAL Civil Engineering students from Region 6 participated in the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) Regional Elimination Quiz for the 37th National Civil Engineering Student Quiz (NCESQ) at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office Conference Hall last weekend.
The selected students came from 11 schools in Western Visayas – University of Antique, St. Anthony’s College, Capiz State University, Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion, Garcia College of Technology, Western Institute of Technology, Central Philippine University, University of San Agustin, University of Iloilo, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and Carlos Hilado Memorial State College.
Engr. Romeo Andig, PICE Vice President for Government Sector, on behalf of PICE Region 6 Coordinator Engr. Jose Al V. Fruto and PICE Iloilo Chapter President Engr. Rodney A. Gustilo, welcomed the participants and their coaches as well as the officers and members of PICE. He also cited special appreciation for the facility of DPWH to host the event.
Andig and Engr. Julius B. Abela, Chief of the Panel of Examiners and the Chief of Construction Division in Capiz 1st District Engineering Office, along with Engr. Doris Mae L. Peñaredondo reviewed the quiz guidelines and the ceremonial opening of examination envelope followed.
The quiz proper had three: 1) Mathematics, Environmental, Energy and Transportation, 2) Design and Construction and 3) Hydraulics and Geotechnical.
Leonard G. De Los Reyes of Capiz State University won 1st place with a cash prize plus trophy and medal while Mar Anthony A. Alimo-ot of Central Philippine University placed 2nd and John Michael P. Guanco of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College ranked 3rd place.
The rest of the quiz participants also brought home a consolation prize.
This quiz is a training ground in doing analyses and critical thinking skills that are needed for the Civil Engineering profession, with the hope of winning the upcoming National Competition. (DPWH-6/PIO)
