City Hall employs indigent students for summer jobs

THE Iloilo City Government through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) has made available the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) that aims to employ indigent students this summer.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III said the program is City Government’s way to help beneficiaries generate income.

“They can use their salary to either pay for their school expenses, buy new clothes or help their parents with household expenses every day,” Espinosa said.

PESO head Ma. Elena Benitez said the 20-day summer program will start on April 16. There will be orientation on April 11 for qualified applicants who are 15 to 30 years old.

Qualified applicants will receive P323.50 a day wherein 60 percent of the payment will come from the City Government while 40 percent will come from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

“Most of our applicants are in junior and senior high school, so we expect that they will not only learn something from the office where they will be assigned, but they will value the money. We hope that they will use it to pay for their school fees or enrolment,” Benitez said.

There were 225 students who availed last year of SPES which has been on-going since 2010. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta/ Iloilo City PIO)
