KALIBO, Aklan – The province of Aklan strengthened its War on Worms (WOW) declaration through Executive Order No. 30 released recently by the provincial government.
The executive order signed by Governor Carlito S. Marquez called for the creation of the Provincial Action Team for the implementation of the War on Worms program in the province of Aklan.
The War on Worms in Western Visayas is the first regional model for worm control which is school-based, school teacher-assisted mass drug immunization (MDA) with intersectoral involvement.
Initially, this project was implemented in Aklan, Antique and Capiz and became successful as cases of infections were reduced. Also, there was improvement in the nutritional status and school performance of school children.
The promising results in the initial sites, according to UP Manila-National Institute of Health (NIH) resulted in the expansion of the program to three other provinces in Region 6 – Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental.
The program is aided by Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Corporate Contributions and Community Relations together with Janssen-Cilag which embarked on the Global Mebendazole Donation Program to decrease the global burden of Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections.
