MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Chinese President Xi Jinping has refused to attend the United Nations conference on climate change to be hosted by the United Kingdom from October 31 to November 12, The Times newspaper said.
According to the British newspaper, organizers of the event in the Scottish city of Glasgow predict that China may skip publishing its national plan to fight global warming.
“It is now completely clear that Xi will not attend and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been informed. China’s position is unclear at the moment. The Asian country moves forward with new commitments at the G20 summit in Rome. Maybe (October 30 and 31), but now it seems impossible,” said a government source, always according to the newspaper.
Organizers believe it would be nearly unrealistic to reach the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees without input from China.

Conversely, another representative of the British government believes that Xi’s absence in Glasgow has nothing to do with it. China’s position on climate.
“The President of China has not traveled to any other country in years. He was not at the UN General Assembly in September and he does not even plan to go to the G-20 summit. Let’s wait for China’s actions on this. Instead of focusing on who will come and who will not for Glasgow,” he said.
The British meeting is expected to approve important documents to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality.
