3 dynamite fishers arrested in Carles

THE Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force’s relentless campaign against illegal fishing activities remains strong with the recent apprehension of three fishermen engaging in dynamite fishing in the marine waters of Brgy. Cabugao Sur, Gigantes Island in Carles, Iloilo.

The suspected illegal fishers were identified as Armando Bung-aw, Martin Romaldo, and Gener Romaldo, all of Sitio Bantigi, Gabi, Carles. They were apprehended around 5pm of July 12, 2011.

Recovered from their possession were two kilos of dynamited fish and a motorized banca equipped with air compressor and diving paraphernalia.

Meanwhile, 14 more fishing vessels were apprehended by the Bantay Dagat during its operations in San Dionisio, Concepcion and Carles from June 28-July 7, 2011 for violation of laws and ordinances against illegal fishing.

On June 28, the Bantay Dagat apprehended F/B MYCA 2 owned by Norberto Villanueva Jr. of Carles in Fiagao, Carles; F/B KYRYL owned by Windy Dela Cruz of Victorias City in Baliguian, Concepcion; and an unidentified fishing boat owned by Reynaldo Liko-an in San Dionisio.

THE district of Molo in this southern city is all set to hold its annual religious fiesta on July 26 in honor of St. Anne as symbol of devotion and commitment to good governance.

The district boasts of its own historical church with 16 female saints. It is also the church visited by national hero Dr. Jose Rizal on his way back to Manila from Dapitan exile.

Fiesta activities are organized by the Association of Barangay Captains headed by Liga president Pascual Espinosa IV of Brgy. San Juan and all punong barangays of 25 villages in the district were given assignments to make the annual fiesta a success.

Espinosa said that Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri will be the honored guest and coronation speaker.

More pregnant women use birthing clinic

ROXAS City – More than a hundred pregnant women gave birth at the birthing clinic of the City Health Office (CHO) here from March to June this year.

“We even have eight normal deliveries in a day,” said City Health Officer Dr. Amelita Robles.

A total of 94 deliveries were recorded in April-June 2011.

Robles said the birthing facility is not totally free but charges an affordable fee of P3,500 for every normal delivery to sustain its operation.

She said the patients can save a lot especially if they are PhilHealth members as the facility is Philhealth accredited.

ROXAS City – Capiz jeepney drivers can avail their fuel assistance through four fuel retail outlets here.

Department of Energy Supervising Engineer Rey Maleza said four liquefied petroleum products (LPP) retail outlets in Capiz are accepting the Pantawid Pasada cards under the government’s Public Transport Assistance Program (PTAP), commonly known as Pantawid Pasada Program.

As of July 11, Maleza said Avenue Caltex Super Station located on Kilometer 1, Roxas City, A&J Petron Service Station in Mambusao town, Mirola Petron Service Station in Roxas Avenue, Roxas City and Lawaan Petron Super Service Station in Crossing Seminary, Lawaan, Roxas City are the accredited points of sales (POS) in Capiz.

JUSTICE Secretary Leila M. de Lima revealed to publishers and editors her department’s three priorities to improve the country’s justice system during the Philippine Press Institute’s (PPI) 15th National Press Forum last June 22 at Traders Hotel Manila.

De Lima said their programs include improvement of the disposition rate at the preliminary investigation level, improvement of the conviction rate, and eliminating corruption and enhancing integrity within the ranks.

De Lima, who was keynote speaker of the forum, said that she hopes this “doable wish list” would be realized at the end of her term.

But she also told her audience the sobering reality that “nothing has changed – journalists are still being kidnapped and killed as fast as the speed of modern information technology.”

FOR the Land Transportation Office, it is not hunger or illnesses but accidents which are the major causes of deaths nowadays.

LTO-6 Director Gerard Camiña said in a radio interview that road safety is now the centerpiece of their operations.

He said Assistant Secretary Virginia Torres has directed all LTO branches to take road safety as their blueprint for the Reform Agenda of “Matuwid Na Daan” the Decade for Action on Road Safety.

“This is part of LTO’s framework of ROAD to Change,” Camiña said.

ROAD to Change is Reform, Organizational Empowerment, Advocacy and Development, where the agency is embarking on greater consciousness of its franchise services, review of existing processes and the use of technology in fast issuance of licensing cards.

Package of benefits for city’s senior citizens

THE Iloilo City government is planning a package of benefits to registered senior citizens on top of the monthly cash allowance given to them by the national and city governments.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the city government and SM Cinema will soon draw a memorandum of agreement to give free movie passes to senior citizens every Tuesday. The free movie program will be launched on August 25 during the Charter day celebration of the city.

Ilonggo Senator Franklin M. Drilon is set to give financial assistance to the city senior citizens for their hospitalization at the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC).
