Guimaras sustains slow inflation in March

Guimaras province sustained slower inflation rate in March 2019 as it slid further to 2.5 percent from 3.2 percent in January and 2.6 percent in February due to the 2.6 percent decelerated index in housing, water electricity, gas and other fuels.

Interestingly, the 2.5 percent inflation in March is the slowest so far for the past 15 months, and lower by 44.4 percent compared to March of 2018.

Moreover, nine out of eleven commodity groups posted faster mark-ups in the annual rates:

  • Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (11.5%);
  • Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (8.2%);
  • Education (4.5%);
  • Health (4.0%);
  • Clothing and Footwear (2.8%);
  • Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (2.7%);

Transport (2.5%);

Recreation and Culture (1.9%);

Restaurants and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (1.8%); while Communication registered slower change of 0.4 percent.

Comparing inflation rates across provinces of Western Visayas region, five provinces recorded decelerated indices while one province slightly inched up its level in the last month of the first quarter.

Guimaras remained at rank no. 4 in terms of slowest inflation rate from January to March 2019 while Antique was at rank no.1 in the first two months. On the other hand, Aklan with a slower

rate of 1.0 percent outranked Antique on the third month. Negros Occidental, however, recorded the fastest inflation rates in the first three months of 2019.
