LaSalud.mx.- Bilateral cooperation in health matters between Mexico and the United Kingdom has resulted in concerted action in the areas of chronic diseases, information exchange and training of health professionals, said Health Secretary, Jorge Alcosar Varela during a meeting with the ambassador. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Mexico, Corinne Robertson.

During the meeting in the facilities of the Ministry of Health, Alcocer Varela recognized the response of the AstraZeneca laboratory officials to make vaccines against COVID-19 available to several Latin American countries.

“The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic took the whole world by surprise, however, vaccination has given a pause to all countries,” said Alcosar Varela.

In her speech, Ambassador Corinne Robertson thanked the Ministry of Health team for their support and cooperation in working together in various areas, especially those recovered from the pandemic. “For us this has been an important and beneficial collaboration to strengthen our health system,” he said.

They indicated their interest in continuing to expand bilateral cooperation and that some of the issues identified include response to COVID-19, vaccination, surveillance, resilience, mental health and research.

He stressed that the United Kingdom has a special interest in the policies implemented by the Mexican government to control obesity, hence the idea of ​​strengthening cooperation.

Sandra Carrizosa Guzmán, Manager of Health Policies and Programs for the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Mexico, presented the results of the Better Health Program, which has been developed since 2018 and includes three lines of collaboration: Primary health care for the purpose of aiding in reducing the spread, prevention and control of diabetes and other non-communicable chronic diseases, and training of personnel working in primary care.

On behalf of the Health Ministry delegation, the head of the Economic Analysis Unit, Marcos Cantero Cortés, and the person in charge of the Office of the General Directorate of International Relations, Martha Caballero Abraham participated.

The United Kingdom’s ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Mexico was accompanied by prosperity councilor Martin Johnston.
