MILITANT groups in Iloilo mark the 120th Independence Day today, June 12, 2018, by staging a protest dubbed “INDIpendence” as a show of opposition to China’s alleged encroachment in the West Philippine Sea.
A play on the Hiligaynon word “indi” which means “no,” the protest at Plazoleta Gay in downtown Iloilo City dramatizes calls for China and the United States to leave the Philippine territory.
Elmer Forro, secretary general of BAYAN-Panay, said they will burn the flags of the China and US during the protest.
“Para sa amon, ang panawagan namon ‘US, China layas, amin ang Pinas’,” Forro said.
Forro also lambasted the Chinese for allegedly installing missiles in the Philippine waters. He also hit the Duterte administration for upholding the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States.
“Halos daw tutoy nga butod man ang aton panguluhan nga si Duterte sa pagsunod sang gusto sang China kag padayon nga presensya sang kusog military sang Estados Unidos sa EDCA kag ang ila mga Balikatan exercises,” he said.
Forro said the country has yet to achieve real independence due to “continued invasion of the Philippine territory.”
