Apple is Set to Introduce Stolen Device Protection Feature in iOS 17.3

In an effort to combat iPhone theft, Apple is rolling out a new feature called Stolen Device Protection. This feature aims to limit the actions that thieves can take with a stolen phone and passcode, providing an extra layer of security for users.

The Stolen Device Protection feature is currently available in the iOS 17.3 beta, but only for developers. This practice allows thieves to change the owner’s Apple ID password, turn off Find My, and factory reset the phone for resale without any interference.

Additionally, it will introduce a one-hour delay before allowing any changes to the Apple ID password, to make it harder for thieves to gain control of the device.

Furthermore, Apple has incorporated additional security measures for other Apple settings, such as recovery keys and iCloud Keychain passwords. This ensures that even if a device falls into the wrong hands, the owner’s sensitive information remains protected.

Apple plans to prompt users to turn on the Stolen Device Protection feature in the upcoming update, iOS 17.3. However, the general public will still have to wait several weeks before being able to try it out themselves.
