Global Vocation: United Kingdom hands with Mexico
Along with the United States, the United Kingdom was one of the international leaders of the liberal democratic order created in the second half of the 20th century. Historically, it has played a leading role in consolidation of multilateral institutions. United Nations, Atlantic Alliance or Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
It could not be otherwise, noting that the British promoted the Industrial Revolution, leading parliamentarism as a government, and liberalism as an economic model and political program.
In 2016, the result of the referendum that gave birth to Brexit was not only the expression of the majority of citizens who voted against continuing Unin Europea. The beginning of Brexit was also a warning sign, which was interpreted more than once as a symptom of a possible turn towards a separatist and protectionist dynamic in the United Kingdom’s relations with the world.
At the time, the UK was thought to openly join a group of opposing countries for an international free trade order based on the principles of multilateralism, integration and cooperation between countries. Pleasantly, today we see a firm step in the opposite direction. One of them is the Business Continuity Agreement between Mexico and the United Kingdom, unanimously approved in the Republic’s Senate plenary this Tuesday.
It is an agreement that guarantees the continuity of free trade between the two countries and, with it, the continuity of integration opportunities offered by this commercial opening; Furthermore, it establishes bases for the beginning of negotiations for a new comprehensive, modern and ambitious bilateral treaty at the height of the challenges of the 21st century.
Although it is a transitory arrangement, the agreement is a clear example of the commitment that both the United Kingdom and Mexico maintain with an open mind for a long period of time. In the same vein, the British government has formally stated its intention to join Comprehensive and Progressive Treaty of Trans-Pacific Partnership, TIPAT, of which our country is a part.
We cannot help but point to the good news behind the British actions: a UK outside of Europe did not mean an illegal UK. Brexit represented a break with a UK regional business, but it did not represent a renunciation of its global business.
On the other hand, it should also be observed that the Senate, amidst strong tension, showed its vision of the state; A political plurality recognizes the importance of promoting a global rules-based order.
A group of legislators can support the continuity agreement and with it our most valuable interests. congratulation.
