Mexicos Popocatépetl volcano erupts 13 times in one day
Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano has been causing concerns as Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center issues warnings of multiple eruptions in the past day. Debris shooting out of the volcano’s crater has led to warnings against climbing the volcano, with volcanic ash disrupting flights at Mexico City’s Benito Juárez international airport.
The airport in Puebla, near the volcano, also temporarily suspended operations due to the presence of gas and fumes from the volcano. Safety concerns have caused cancellations and delays in flights in Mexico City, with airport officials emphasizing the importance of safety in operations amidst ongoing monitoring of flight conditions.
Volcanic ash poses dangers to aviation, including reduced visibility and potential damage to aircraft. While the Popocatépetl volcano has been active for half a million years and regularly erupts, the last major eruption took place more than a thousand years ago. Volcanologists describe the recent activity as “nothing new or surprising.”
Passengers are advised to stay updated on flight statuses and adhere to any safety measures put in place by airport authorities. The situation is being closely monitored as authorities work to ensure the safety of all individuals amidst the ongoing volcanic activity.
