The environment participated in a meeting of leaders to reduce methane emissions
The Nation’s Environmental Portfolio, led by Juan Cabande, through the Minister for Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Innovation, Cecilia Nicolini, participated in the meeting on methane mitigation with US Special Climate Envoy, John Kerry; California Governor, Gavin Newsom; authorities from other countries on the continent; and global leaders.
During her speech, Minister Nicolini highlighted Argentina’s commitment to the climate agenda, detailing the benefits of undertaking joint initiatives to reduce emissions of this type of gas. In this sense, he said, “As experts point out, methane has a much greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide. For this reason, when we advance measures to reduce emissions of this gas, we generate a positive impact faster.”
He added, “These measures not only bring environmental benefits. They also allow us to strengthen our technological capabilities and the possibility of exchanging knowledge with other countries on the continent.”
Nicolini also highlighted the need to review the global financial architecture to enhance climate action in developing countries, and stated in this regard: “The flow of money today is not enough and business models do not always encourage investment in the projects that we must promote. From the global south, we need financing It adapts to the challenges ahead, which takes into account the specificities of each country and allows us to face the climate crisis without leaving anyone behind.”
event organized by Global Methane Center (GMH), a space for exchange between representatives of the public, private and academic sectors to accelerate measures to achieve the goals outlined in the Global Commitment on Methane. It should be noted that the aforementioned commitment made Argentina one of the signatories to the preliminary agreement, within the framework of COP26 held in Glasgow, in 2021.
