US Expands “Stay in Mexico” Immigration Program to San Diego
San Diego. Nearly a month after reactivating the Border Program Protocol for the Protection of Migrants (MPP) in El Paso, Texas, which forces asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for US immigration hearings, the US government has San Diego, California, expanded Trump-era politics. pursuant to a federal court order.
Democratic President Joe Biden, soon after taking office last January, sought to dismantle his predecessor Donald Trump’s policy, also known as ‘stay in Mexico’.
But after Texas and Missouri trial, a federal judge ruled that he had to be reinstated. Biden resumed the event on December 6 in El Paso, Texas.
Officials said on Monday, 36 migrants were taken to immigration court in that county to have their trial held as part of the reinstated program.
Last week, the government asked the United States Supreme Court whether it needed to continue implementing the program. Under a policy implemented by former President Trump, migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border seeking asylum must wait in Mexico for their cases to be decided, rather than allowing them to wait for their hearing in the US Go.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Meyercas said in October that the Trump program had “endemic flaws” and “unreasonable human costs.”
The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, called for the program to end, saying it puts asylum seekers at risk and harms their due process rights.
