The Financial Times says the Covid-19 situation shows that the economy is linked to epidemiology

When a dangerous virus spreads, you cannot separate economics from epidemiology, according to a recent opinion piece in the Financial Times, Xinhua reported.

“Early and strict quarantines paid off in 2020 across much of Asia and the Pacific. This year, COVID-19 vaccines and effective treatments have brought life back to normal in Europe and the United States. The United States, as long as countries have the ability to encourage and coerce a number enough people to get vaccinated,” the text states.

Now, the shadow of the omicron variable looms over the global economy. Preliminary evidence suggests that it is more transmissible than the delta variant, in fact in South Africa and the UK, omicron cases are growing at an extraordinary rate.

Emphasizing the importance of swift action, the article urged governments of rich countries to adopt the precautionary principle, in addition to speeding up booster doses of vaccines.
