Kenin will not participate in the US Open due to recurrent COVID-19 infection
Aug 25 (Reuters) – Tennis player Sofia Kenin will not participate in the US Open after testing positive for COVID-19 multiple times despite vaccination, she said on Wednesday.
American Kenin, the winner of the 2020 Australian Open, was the fifth seed of the New York tournament and her name joins a long list of stars who will not participate, such as Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep.
“I am writing to you with disappointing news,” Kenin said on Twitter.
“I recently tested positive for COVID-19. Fortunately, I have been vaccinated and so my symptoms are fairly mild. However, I have continued to test positive, so I will not be competing at the US Open next week. I’ll get it.” said.
“I plan to spend the next few weeks recovering from this fall and playing well. Thank you for supporting me. I want to wish all the New York players all the best.”
22-year-old Kenin, also known as Sonya, is one of the influential children of young American tennis players new on the circuit along with Jennifer Brady, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins.
The main draw matches of the US Open begin on Monday.
