THE Iloilo City Council endorsed on Jan. 10, 2017 the proposed gun ban in the metro on March 3-18, 2017.
The body approved Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon's resolution requesting PNP Director General Ronald "Bato" de la Rosa to issue an order suspending permit to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR) when Iloilo City hosts the ASEAN meetings.
The gun ban is upon the request of Gen. Jose Gentiles, PRO-6 chief, who is also the head of ASEAN security operations in Iloilo City and Boracay Island.
The city will host five ASEAN meetings from Mar. 6-17.
Gentiles said the suspension of PTCFOR is to prevent firearm-related incidents.
The gun ban, however, has no exemption.
Ganzon said in his report that Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog requested that he be exempted from the ban.
"Per Gen. Gentiles, only Gen. Bato de la Rosa can issue gun ban exemption," Ganzon said.
