BACOLOD City – Col. Oscar Lactao, commander of the 303rd Brigade, is cautioning barangay officials who get involved in the rebel movement after a slain rebel killed in an encounter recently turned out to be a purok president in barangay of a city in northern Negros.
Lactao said that he was initially surprised when the slain rebel was identified as a certain Edgar Saguirre Lopez, purok president of Barangay Jonob Jonob, Escalante City.
He reiterated that as government officials even purok presidents have taken their allegiance to the Philippine flag which follows that they uphold the law of the Republic.
He said that unfortunately Lopez was the first to have been hit by gunfire from government troops in the encounter that took place in the area recently.
He revealed there were three other rebels who were wounded in that encounter.
Lactao said he was alarmed by the affiliation of an active barangay official with the NPA.
