BACOLOD City – The Bacolod City Police Office yesterday filed robbery with homicide/murder charges against two suspected call boys for the brutal slay of Dr. Andres Gumban here.

Meanwhile, S/Supt. Ricardo Dela Paz in a press conference showed to the local media a video recorder, recovered by police forces, showing how the crime was committed by the two suspects.

Dela Paz said the video clearly showed that the crime was well-planned by the suspects, a 16-year-old minor from Barangay Mabini, Cadiz City and Fof Pascual, 18 years old from Barangay Tadlong, Sagay City.

Dela Paz said the video will be used as evidence against the two suspects.

He said suspects’ self-defense claim has been weakened by the video recovery.

The suspects said the victim attempted to sexually assault one of them but the police said it was only their alibi.

The video showed that the 16-year-old suspect hit the doctor with a large stone on the head from behind.

When the victim fell on the floor, Pascual stabbed him in the different parts of his body.

The victim sustained 34 stab wounds, his neck nearly cut off, Dela Paz said.

The video also showed that the struggling victim was dragged by the 16-year-old suspect to the bathroom where he was finished off.

Dela Paz said they are further investigating the possibility that the suspects could also be behind the hold-up slay of two gays recently. One of the gays was a call center agent who was found dead at a pension house here. The other gay victim was stabbed dead in his house.

Dr. Gumban was the third gay victim, Dela Paz said.

Dela Paz  also confirmed valuables and cash were missing from the doctor’s house. The missing items included an I-pod, a necklace, a wrist watch and P50,000 in cash.

He added that it is possible that there are other suspects aside from Fof Pascual Jr., and the 16-year-old from Cadiz City, whom the victim met through the social network.

He said that based on their investigation, someone saw Pascual and the minor texting and going back and forth outside the house of Gumban as if they were waiting for someone before the killing took place.

Danger of 'honeymoon'

"DEMOCRACY cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education." – Franklin D. Roosevelt

We always maintain that it is not healthy for democracy if the government's executive and legislative branches are always in honeymoon stage.

I WENT early on May 13 to cast my vote. The precinct was in much better state than what we found in 2010. It seemed as though the different teams, the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs), the volunteers, and barangay officials had worked on a better system of time and motion which would be able to deal with the longer lines that would come later on in the day. This piece was delivered yesterday at church of the Triumph of the Holy Cruz parish of Fr. Joevic Lemoncito. However, I spoke in Hiligaynon. I am publishing this due to inquiries about this festival that falls in May and the end of summer.

The word “santacruzan” is a Filipino version of the Spanish “Fiesta de la Santa Cruz” or Feast of the Holy Cross. Read more...

Reflection after the counting

AFTER THE election, many are either awed or dismayed by the results.

For instance, due to the majority’s veneration of “stars,” several posts in the government heap up stardust’s.

Sad to say, they are not real stars beyond their ostentatious speeches and well-rehearsed acts on screen. Read more...

WHO, among men, like flat-chested women? Hollywood actor and singer Frank Sinatra, whose fame swept the 1940s, probably leads the way. His second wife Mia Farrow was a much younger and skinny girl that could not show much from the 90 degree angle off-front.
