BACOLOD City – S/Supt. Ricardo Dela Paz revealed that robbery with homicide charges will be filed this week against two suspected call boys for the brutal death of a prominent doctor here.

Dela Paz believes the motive of the crime is robbery. However, he pointed out that the robbery was not carried out by the suspects because of the timely intervention of the doctor’s neighbors who heard a scuffle and calls for help by the victim.

Dr. Andres Gumban, 62, a pulmonary specialist, was butchered to death by two suspects, one of them a minor after the victim allegedly forced himself on one of them about 10:45pm Thursday night at the victim’s residence in Barangay Alijis here.

One of the suspects was identified as a certain Pof Pascual, 18 years old of Barangay Tadlong, Sagay City.

The other minor suspect who claimed the victim attempted to sexually assault him is from Barangay Mabini, Cadiz City.

Dela Paz said their investigation showed that the victim knew the 16-year-old suspect through the social network and was brought by the victim to his residence in the past.

It was learned by police operatives that the 16-year-old suspect brought Pascual with him in his second meeting with the victim who fetched them from the northbound terminal and passed by a mall here before proceeding to the victim’s house.

But Dela Paz said the attempted sexual assault is just an alibi of the suspects.

He said both could have easily overpowered the victim but not necessarily killing him because the latter was smaller in built and much older than both of them.

Dela Paz stressed there was an intent to kill the victim based on the stab wounds suffered by the victim whose neck was almost severed from his body.

He said they are looking at the background of the two suspects and initially learned that one of them had allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend.

Dela Paz also said that both suspects will be subjected to drug tests amid suspicions that both could be under the influence of illegal drugs when they committed the crime.

Expendable

There was a war movie titled “They were Expendable” that tells the story of a unit in WWII that was dispensed with as a sacrifice for a greater and higher good – winning the war.

The story of all wars, military and political always has the expendables, the people whose loss is considered necessary for victory. Chess players sacrifice a pawn to save the knight or the rook to save the queen. Read more...

IT’S BEGINNING to look like a stretch, but assuming the integrity of the May 2013 mid-term exercise—meaning the votes cast were accurately counted by the Comelec’s problematic PCOS machines and transmitted—the efforts of individual Netizens as well as groups to influence the outcome seems to have come to naught. By: RANIE Z. JANGAYO

AS OF PRESS time, the opposition is still collating the reports on alleged vote buying committed particularly by Liberal Party candidates who already had the advantage of the entire machinery of Malacañang at their disposal before and during the campaign period, with a very sympathetic Comelec at that.
