BORACAY Island – The local government of Malay, Aklan now prohibits the practice of sandbagging especially at the front beach of this resort island.

Island administrator Glen Sacapano said the regulation was embodied in the quarrying of beach sand in Boracay.

Resort owners here often use sandbagging as coast protection for their respective establishments.

"When one gets sand and put it inside a bag especially on huge volumes, it destroys the natural flow of water. In essence, this destroys the environment of Boracay," Sacapano said.

Already, the local government had found some establishments violating the said rule. Sacapano said they will be called for a meeting soon to enlighten them about the regulations.

He added that sandbagging is allowed in the front beach on condition that the sand used does not come from the front beach of Boracay.

The sandbagging practice is one of the reasons being pointed out as causing beach erosion experienced in some parts of the island. (PNA)
