A FAMILY celebration turned tragic after two persons died due to drowning inside a resort in Oton, Iloilo Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened inside Anhawan Beach Resort at Brgy. Poblacion South, Oton when cousins Mark Paul and Rodnel Gabara of Janiuay, Iloilo swam in a deep portion of the resort.
The cousins did not expect the depth of the sea and shouted for help when they could not keep afloat.
Their uncles Rodolfo Gabara, 35, Ervin Gabara, 46, and Rodolfo Ladiana, 50, responded to their shouts for help and swam to their rescue.
The cousins were brought to safety but their uncles went underwater after rescuing them. The lifeless Rodolfo and Ervin were later found by rescuers while Ladiana is under treatment at the hospital.
The victims were celebrating the birthday of a relative when tragedy struck.
The resort has yet to issue a statement as to why there was no lifeguard stationed in the resort to help the victims and why there was no marker or warning on the deeper portions of the beach.
