A TOTAL of 420 poor but deserving students here are beneficiaries of the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
They have been assigned by the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to work in different departments and offices of the city government starting May 7 to 25.
The program will be a great help in augmenting their educational expenses, he added.
The students will each receive P233 daily, 60 percent of which comes from the city government and 40 percent is shouldered by DOLE.
City PESO manager Alan Zaldivar said SPES beneficiaries are students from public high school and colleges here, aged 15 to 25 years old, and come from poor families.
“The program has positive impact in the life of students; in fact two SPES products have moved on to become city scholars and finally graduated at the top of their class, one as Cum Laude and the other with honors,” he said.
SPES is implemented by DOLE during summer and/or Christmas vacations to help poor but deserving students pursue their education by encouraging their employment in private or government employers.
City Hall departments and offices with student workers are the PESO, City Library, Local Civil Registrar’s Office, Resource Employees Association of City Hall, City Accountant’s Office, City Tourism and Development Office, Beautification Project, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, Liga ng mga Barangay, City Social Welfare and Development Office, Local Economic Enterprise Office, City Population Office, City Treasurer’s Office, Task Force on Moral and Values Formation, and Iloilo City Police Office.
