THE PHILIPPINE men's national basketball team cruised to victory against the young Chinese-Taipei B, 99-68, in Day Two of the William Jones International Basketball Tournament Sunday in Taipei.
Former San Beda star Garvo Lanete sparked Smart Gilas Pilipinas II with 21 points, while Larry Fonacier (12 points), Marcus Douthit (11 points) and LA Tenorio (11 points) also scored in double-digits.
It was the second straight victory for Gilas II after beating Jordan, 88-78, in their first game of the tournament.
"Knowing that we're playing a team younger than we are, the objective was not to be outworked and not to lose on hustle departments," Gilas head coach Chot Reyes toldPBA.ph.
"We made sure of that, and that's what happened with the youngest guy on our team, Garvo Lanete, giving us a big spark"
Gilas II had little trouble dealing with Chinese-Taipei B, which was composed of mostly young players. The national team zoomed to a 28-18 lead after the opening frame and was ahead 53-32 at the half.
Douthit was ably backed up by big men Sonny Thoss and Jay-R Reyes as the Gilas frontline combined for 27 points and 22 rebounds. The backcourt was also productive, making seven of their 15 thee-point attempts.
Gilas II will have a one-day break on Monday but will play against Korea on Tuesday to start a stretch of six straight games.
