FILIPINA long jump bet Marestella Torres failed to qualify for the medal round, achieving a best distance of 6.22 meters on her last attempt, Tuesday (early Wednesday, PHL time), good for 22nd place out of a field of 28.
She notched just 5.98 meters on her first attempt, followed by 6.21 meters on her second try, before winding up with her best distance of 6.22 meters.
Great Britain's Shara Proctor topped the qualifiers with a 6.83 meter performance, one of four to hit the qualifying mark and automatically proceed to the finals.
The other three were Janay Deloach of the United States (6.81), Karin Mey Melis of Turkey (6.80), and Elena Sokolova of Russia (6.71).
Veronika Shutkova of Belarus rounded out the top 12 with a distance of 6.40 meters.
With Torres out of the running, that leaves just two Filipinos still in the hunt, namely runner Rene Herrera of the 5000m and BMX biker Daniel Caluag, both of whom will see action on Wednesday. (GMA News)
