SAN JOSE, Antique – The secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) has lauded a Kinaray-a workbook for Grade 1 “Buylog sa Kinaaram” as a source of pride of the people of Antique.
DepEd Secretary Armin A. Luistro complimented the first workbook in mother tongue-Kinaray-a during its launch on Wednesday at University of Antique, Sibalom, Antique.
“The book is our source of pride as a Filipino in the sense that we can’t speak true Filipino or fluent English unless we speak from the heart and speak from where we come from,” said Luistro.
The best way to read, speak and write, he added, is in the mother tongue, in Kinaray-a. Once a student learns to read in Kinaray-a, he or she will be able to read using the same competencies in any other language, he said.
“Buylog sa Kinaaram,” a work book for Grade 1 in mother tongue -Kinaray-a is the first workbook created aside from the 12 already established workbook materials in different dialects in the country. It contains short stories and reading materials anchored in the culture and traditions of the Antiquenos.
A project identified by the Sibalom Education Community being the pilot area in the Visayas of the program Enabling Education Community (EEC) of the Ayala Foundation with support from the Philippine-Australia Community Assistance Program (Pacap) of the Australian government.
The book has also engaged services of various groups, professors and educators from University of Antique, education supervisors, kinaray-a writers, scholars, experts in mother tongue – Kinaray-a, DepEd family, pupils and other stakeholders. (PIA)
