FILIPINO lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is hopeful that he will be chosen as the opponent of Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez, who plans to return to the ring on July 14 at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Gesta is among the frontrunners for a fight against Marquez, along with another Mexican fighter, Erik Morales.
“I know it’s not confirmed, but I hope he would choose me,” Gesta said in a Boxing Scene interview. “Right now, it doesn’t affect me, whoever he’s going to choose.”
“I’m always ready. I’m going to train like I’m fighting for a big fight. If he chooses me, that’s perfect because I’m always training like a title fight. I’m always ready,” he added.
Gesta is undefeated with 25 wins and one draw and is coming off an eighth-round technical knockout victory over Columbian boxer Oscar Cuero last April 14.
The Filipino boxer believes he is a better choice for Marquez than Morales, who recently lost his junior welterweight title against Danny Garcia via unanimous decision.
“I see him kind of slowing down now. I think people like that fight because he is an icon, kind of like Marquez,” Gesta said of Morales.
“But Marquez, I would pick him to win that fight if it happens. Morales, I just think he’s slowing down and he can’t pull the trigger anymore,” he added.
Gesta will start his training camp on June 1 at Big Bear in California.
“I think it will be a big fight and that’s why we feel we need to go to Big Bear. It’s high-altitude, where the champions train,” Gesta said. (ABS-CBNnews.com)
