A THIRD time was indeed the charm for Brian Viloria, as he finally defeated Mexican Omar Nino Romero via a technical knockout on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, retaining his WBO Flyweight title.
In a fight dubbed "Island Assault IV," the 31-year-old Viloria looked dominant early on, unleashing several combos to his 36-year-old opponent's head. His aggressive tactics were rewarded with a cut over Romero's left eye in the fifth round.
The two fighters slowed down in the sixth and seventh rounds, but by then, Viloria was clearly the winner of the majority of the rounds.
Romero's corner finally conceded the bout in the ninth to give Viloria some measure of revenge. After he was announced as the winner, Viloria celebrated by doing the hula to the delight of his hometown crowd.
The fight concludes a trilogy between the two combatants, as Viloria dropped the WBC World Light Flyweight title to Romero back in August 2006.
In a rematch three months later, Romero retained his title with a controversial draw, but the result of the post-fight drug test on the Mexican rendered the earlier ruling "a no decision." (GMA News)
