THE adage “political loyalty is like the shifting sand in the desert” has become more pronounced with the actuations of politicians jockeying for elective positions in the 2013 elections.

Take the case of former Governor Niel Tupas Sr. Insiders in the United Nationalist Alliance of Vice President Jejomar Binay say that Tupas is a cinch closer to joining UNA because the ruling Liberal Party is about to embrace nemesis Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr.

Tupas can easily jump ship if Senator Franklin Drilon fails to stop DOTC secretary Mar Roxas and his political operators from getting Defensor into their fold. The grapevine says that Mar is mad at Niel and his family for “betraying” him in the 2010 elections. “Instead of campaigning hard for Mar, the family went for NoyBi,” one LP source said.

But to believe the yarn that the LP can just forget about the Tupases is crazy. Those who think PNoy will turn his back on the Tupases must have forgotten the bumbling Congressman Niel Tupas Jr., the lead “tirador” in the impeachment train from the House of Representatives.

Given the resources and options at the disposal of the ruling party, PNoy, Mar and big man Frank can always find a win-win solution for Iloilo’s politics. For example, they can invite Governor Defensor to join them and offer agurang Niel a juicy position in the national government.

Everybody happy!

AIDS

A TEXT message from a joker spread like wildfire yesterday after The Daily Guardian bannered the story on the rising HIV/AIDS cases in Western Visayas with a subhead on a mediaman and a lawyer as among the victims. According to the joker, veteran journalist Teddy Sumaray has come forward to admit that he has AIDS, albeit a different kind.

Acute Income Deficiency Syndrome.

Well, veteran columnist Herbert Vego was among the first to popularize this kind of AIDS but methinks Mr. Sumaray is overqualified to win the title. There are other mediamen out there who are deserving of the title.

‘Persecuted’

A MAYOR in the 5th District of Iloilo is being “persecuted” by an LP stalwart. This mayor may be suspended by the Ombudsman or the Sandiganbayan if he doesn’t pay obeisance to the LP stalwart whose family is known for their corrupt ways. If not for a congressman-friend from another district, the mayor could have problems in his hands more than he can handle.

And the winner is – the politics of the stomach. This is the verdict of the recently concluded national and local elections. Unprecedented vote-buying ruled the day. Vote buying had been around since the time the dictator Ferdinand Marcos made it a regular fixture in Philippine elections but in the last election it has worsened. Read more...

PENTECOST SUNDAY

Gospel Reading: John 14:15-16.23-26

This Sunday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Pentecost or the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples after the Lord’s resurrection (Acts 2:1-13). The term “Pentecost” comes from the Greek word pentekosté meaning “fiftieth (sc. day).” Fr. Roland de Vaux, OP – a prominent Biblical scholar – in his monumental work Les institutions de l’Ancien Testament (Paris 1958-1960),  Read more...

(FOR A post-election change in pace, we'll skip discussing PCOS machines, losing candidates, to economics this Sunday. It happens to be the end of the Easter season. Therefore, we're sending in a column on Pentecost written by Deacon Greg Kandra. You'll find Kandra's writing snappy and to the point. Enjoy. – JLM)

If you had to name one of the most quoted speeches of the 20th century, one near the top of any list would be the inaugural address of John F. Kennedy in 1961, with his call: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Read more...

Dynastic grip

YESTERDAY’S banner story of The Daily Guardian, “LP-backed dynasties maintain grip in Iloilo” clearly proves that the electorate does not give a hoot whether a candidate belongs to a political dynasty or not.

Meaning, the dynasties will continue to rule. Look at all the winners in the provincial local elections. Read more...

FIRST, LET me reiterate my earlier announcement that I do not have a Facebook account so that whoever is using my name is a fraud. I hope my friends who get into this faked account can tell the owners that they are committing a crime for misrepresentation and misuse of the internet. There is such thing as a cybercrime.

I promised history buffs that after the election, I will again give time and space to articles dealing on history. Read more...
